The Betty Interview: Jordin Sparks
The soft-spoken singer dishes with BettyConfidential about her beef with Russell Brand, why Idol won’t be the same without Paula Abdul, and her crush on a certain Twilight-er.
Jordin Sparks is a lot tougher than she looks. The 19-year-old pop singer with the perma smile isn’t afraid to stand up to foul-mouthed British comedian Russell Brand – again. With MTV’s Video Music Awards just weeks away on September 13, and with Brand back at the helm, the former American Idol winner is ready for anything he might dish out. Why the feud? Because the pair got into a rather surprising battle at last year’s awards over – of all things – teenage virginity.
After the star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall made a joke about the Jonas Brothers‘ purity rings, when Jordin (who wears one herself) took the stage to introduce T.I., she abandoned the teleprompter and quipped, “I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.” Thanks to that, now Jordin feels she might be the butt of one (or many) of Brand’s jokes at this year’s awards. Her message to the host: “It’s OK, Russell. I can take it,” she says, confidently. “It’s all good.”
Just another thing the mature-beyond-her-years star takes in stride. While other reality show winners have faded into obscurity, two years after Jordin was crowned the American Idol, she’s won countless awards (American Music, Teen and People’s Choice and NAACP to name a few) and has gone on tour in support of her second hit album, Battlefield, with the biggest names in the biz. First with the Jonas Brothers (who she considers “amazing guys”), and now with one of her longtime idols, Britney Spears. “The first song I ever heard of hers was ‘…Baby One More Time,'” says the Phoenix native. “I was 9 and couldn’t hit the low notes! I met her at the VMAs last year when she sat right in front of me. I was so excited I got to take a picture with her!”
