The 2009 Academy Award nominations are finally in, and Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe and George Clooney will all have something to celebrate today!
Sandra Bullock was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in The Blind Side, while Gabourey Sidibe was nominated for her debut role in Precious, and Oscar staple Meryl Streep was nominated for Julie & Julia. Vera Farmiga, Penelope Cruz and Mo’Nique were all nominated for Best Supporting Actress trophies for Up in the Air, Nine and Precious, respectively.
As for the men, Stanley Tucci and Matt Damon both received Best Supporting Actor nods for The Lovely Bones and Invictus. George Clooney, Colin Firth and Morgan Freeman all received Best Actor nominations for Up in the Air, A Single Man and Invictus, respectively.
James Cameron of Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow of The Hurt Locker will square off again in the Best Director category alongside Inglourious Basterds’ Quentin Tarantino, Precious’ Lee Daniels and Up in the Air’s Jason Reitman.
The Best Picture category is a biggie this year, with 10 contenders in the running for the top award. Avatar, Up in the Air, Inglourious Basterds, Precious and The Hurt Locker all made it to this category, as expected, but there were still a few surprises. The Blind Side and the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man were honored alongside An Education. The dark science fiction film District 9 made it to the top category, along with Up, which was also nominated for Best Animated Feature.
The Academy Awards will air on March 7, and will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Who do you think will take the top honors? (Moviefone)
