‘Tis the Season
The Bettys’ List: Wishing and Giving
We’re making our list and checking it twice!
Here’s what The Bettys are pining and planning for … from our most materialistic hearts’ desires to our most heartfelt gifts.
Deborah Perry Piscione, Co-Founder and CEO:
A silk Cosabella cami – in beige please (boring, I know).
I am giving a computer to my mom so she can be in the 21st century, and a vacation to Hawaii to my husband!
Julie Ryan Evans, Editor-at-Large:
In my dreams, I’d like one of the Louis Vuitton bags featured in the Madonna ad campaign … or Madonna’s arms. In reality, I’d like a good jogging stroller.
For my friends: A phone call, since I NEVER can seem to call anyone these days. Thank God for Facebook or I’d never talk to anyone.
For my son: A pogo stick that he’s been asking for since he was 2 (seriously). He’s 5 now, and will be thrilled, and hopefully safe.
April Daniels Hussar, Managing Editor:
Don’t tell Judy, but I’m wishing for a new pair of UGGS. Yes, they are UGGly … but so warm and cozy – a must for this California girl suffering the wretchedness of the East Coast winter. And … on an entirely impractical note … my little materialistic heart yearns for a fancy watch, with sparkly diamonds of course. I keep seeing ads for these Seiko Kinetic watches – lovely. Or I’d be happy with a vintage Tiffany’s watch from eBay like this beautiful platinum number. Hey – this is my “wish” list right?
Still racking my brains for what to get my husband (as the time runs out!). Santa Claus is bringing our 5-year-old daughter a sled, “toy food” and a dolly high chair, per her instructions.
Carrie Seim, L.A. Correspondent:
Buenos Aires travel books (for my new year’s trip to Argentina!). And laser hair removal (also for my New Year’s trip to Argentina!)
For my newlywed friends: An elegant self-inking return address stamp with their new initials from Three Designing Women.
Stocking stuffers for everyone on my list: Clever finger puppets of historic personalities like Marie Curie, Charles Darwin & Jane Austen. (Only $5.95 from The Unemployed Philosophers Guild)
Stephanie Elliot, Parenting Editor, Lit Lounge Editor & Manic Mommy:
I’m sitting here trying to think of something I need, and I guess it’s a pretty nice feeling to be able to say that I don’t need anything. I’ll always take, appreciate, love … gift cards to Barnes & Noble. Just the hour or two to get away, grab a coffee and roam the aisles is a gift for me!
I’m getting my daughter art supplies — she’s really into drawing these days, and I want her to focus on her creativity more. All the nephews and nieces on my list are getting more of the creative-type gifts this year. I’m tired of getting them crap-toys with lots of parts that just break or get lost.
I also got all my siblings, parents and in-laws a cozy nap blanket from Brookstone. Everyone’s getting the same thing (in different colors). I have one, and it’s so comfy. I figure, who wants to return a snuggly gift like that?
Megan Southwick, Career+Money Editor:
The only thing on my wish list is a cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Springtime landscaping for my mom (because she can’t do it anymore).
Cookie assortments (money is tight, but I can bake with the best of them!) and home-made bath and body products, including massage bars, bath salts, sugar scrubs, silkening powder.
Judy McGuire, Relationships Editor:
My family always exchanges gifts, but I really feel like this year, I have finally accumulated enough useless crap. A trip through the Ninth Ward in New Orleans last month gave me the idea that instead of giving me stuff, anyone who’s planning on getting me something, instead make a donation here.
My brother and his wife are expecting their first kid (I’m going to be an auntie for the first time), so I’m getting them a bunch of impractical, overpriced baby clothing. . . I’m thinking a Ramones onesie, pink sequined booties and a cashmere receiving blanket that the baby can cover in baby puke.
I’m getting my Pilates instructor some sort of snowboarding thingy and my mailman a crisp $20 bill, even though he doesn’t deserve it.
Carolyn French, Editorial Assistant:
The Dark Knight 2-disc special edition DVD would have been on my wish list, but it was released on the 9th! So since I already own it, I would like to receive Francesca Lia Block’s new books; she has two new ones out that I am dying to read.
I will be giving my mother a beautiful scarf, which I found on my last excursion to San Francisco; the boyfriend has yet to give me any clues as to what he would fancy so that’s still up in the air.
The Bettys want to know … what’s on YOUR wish list?
