Love ’em or hate ’em, horror movies hold a unique spot in pop culture. It’s possible no other genre of film has quite as many sub-genres. There’s gothic, urban, slasher, supernatural, zombie, splatter, torture, exploitation and the straight-up Horror-horror, just to name a few. One of the things that’s consistent about it all, though, is the Scream Queen at the center of it all. There are very few truly good horror movies that don’t have a beautiful (and ideally somewhat virginal) woman at the center of the action. In tribute to that fact, and to commemorate Megan Fox’s induction into that group with the release of her new film Jennifer’s Body (in which she plays a real man-eater), here’s our list of the top 10 scream queens of all time. Popcorn optional.

10. Marilyn Burns

Marilyn Burns

Heroine of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in 1974, as well as such ’70s classics as Helter Skelter and Eaten Alive, Marilyn Burns might not be as well known as the other names on this list, but she was certainly a trailblazer for a good chunk of them. (Honorable mention here to Debbie Rochon, the star of dozens of Troma films, with titles like Santa Claws, Bleed and, our favorite, Corpses Are Forever.)

9. Megan Fox

She would be higher on the list, but the fact of the matter is, Megan Fox has only done the one horror flick, Jennifer’s Body, which opens this week. She does get bonus points, of course, for having been in two Transformer movies and for apparently being completely nuts.

Jamie Lee Curtis is of course number 1! But what about Naomi in The Ring movies? And I would’ve thought Neve Campbell would have been a little higher up
