While the Senate squabbles over healthcare reform, a more serious challenge faces 17 million Americans today: hunger.
According to startling new report by the Department of Agriculture, the number of people struggling to put food on the table has dramatically spiked to almost 15 percent of the total U.S. population this year.
In a statement, President Obama called the report “unsettling” and restated his administration’s commitment to ending hunger.
“The first task is to restore job growth, which will help relieve the economic pressures that make it difficult for parents to put a square meal on the table each day. But we are also taking targeted steps to prevent Americans from experiencing hunger,” he said.
Obama also called on Congress to pass a “strong” child nutrition bill to help ensure that American children don’t go hungry. (CNN)
