In Indonesia, poverty is a widespread issue that leaves uneducated women with few options. Many have no choice but to become migrant workers in other countries, leaving the door wide open for those in the sex trade industry to make these women slaves.
One such woman, Sunarsih, recently spoke to CNN about how she was forced to become a sex slave after landing what she thought was a legitimate job as a housekeeper for a Saudi man and his paralyzed father.
“The lower part of his body was paralyzed,” Sunarsih said, shuddering. “He would ask me to give him a massage using a vibrator on his penis.”
Sunarsih was molested by her employer and nine sons against her will until she eventually escaped. However, hers wasn’t a happy ending. The shelter she went to live at sold her to a pimp for $1300 and, for more than a year, she was brutally raped and sodomized by strangers.
“I felt like I was dying. It would have been better for me to commit suicide,” she said. “I was humiliated. They treated me like an animal. But the pimp said that the clients paid a very high price for me.”
After the operation was raided, Sunarsih was jailed for 6 months before being deported back to Indonesia where she hasn’t told anyone, not even the police, about what has happened to her.
“I am nearly 40 now,” she said, “and I still don’t know what true happiness is.” (CNN)
