Betty on the News: Army Arrests Single Mother Who Refused to Deploy
An Army cook who has been raising her 10-month-old son by herself could face criminal charges after skipping out on her deployment to Afghanistan.
Spc. Alexis Hutchinson insists that she couldn’t find anyone to take care of her child and was therefore instructed to put her son in foster care by Army superiors. Hutchinson’s attorney told the Associated Press that she was unwilling to essentially abandon her baby.
A spokesman for the Army disclosed that commanders are looking into the incident and that the Army would never force a single parent to sacrifice their child.
“If she would have come to the deployment terminal with her child, there’s no question she would not have been deployed,” the rep stated.
Hutchinson is being held at a base in Savannah, Ga., though charges have yet to be filed against her. The boy is currently with his grandmother in California. (Newser)
