Betty on the News: College Student Recants Gang Rape Story
Four men are freed after sexual assault allegations are dropped
For reasons still unknown, an 18-year-old woman has withdrawn her account of a brutal gang rape that was thought to have taken place on Sunday.
Four men were released from jail Wednesday after authorities shelved charges that they sexually assaulted a Hofstra University student.
“I’m so happy the truth finally came out,” Stalin Felipe, one of the accused, told reporters outside the Nassau County Jail in East Meadow.
The young woman originally accused five men of snatching her cell phone at an on-campus club and luring her into a men’s room before raping her, but on Wednesday she told authorities that the sexual encounter was completely consensual.
Felipe, 19, Kevin Taveras, 20, Rondell Bedward, 21 and Jesus Ortiz, 19 would have faced 25 years behind bars if convicted.
“I’m so happy everything worked out in our favor,” Taveras’ father said. “That’s no way to treat people.”
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says that her office has initiated a criminal investigation into the woman’s statements. (FOXNews.com)
