In a stunning loss for gay rights advocates, voters in Maine yesterday shot down a law that would allow same-sex marriage in their state.
Question 1, which rescinds a same-sex marriage law passed in May, was voted through by 53%, largely due to Maine’s Catholic population and large support in rural areas
The vote yesterday was important one, not only for Maine but for same-sex proponents nation-wide, as it is believed by some that the gay rights movement has to win progressive states like Maine in order to move forward.
Despite the loss, however, same-sex marriage advocates vowed to keep fighting.
“We’re here for the long haul,” said “No on 1” campaign manager Jesse Connolly. (Newser)
