Betty on the News: Parents Blame Facebook for Teen’s Suicide
Are social networking sites ruining teenagers’ lives?
In the fall of 2006 a young girl by the name of Megan Meier hanged herself after a mother posing as a boy told the MySpace user that the world would be a better place without her. Now two parents in Britain are facing a similar tragedy as their 15-year-old daughter committed suicide last week after an onslaught of cyberbullying.
Steve and Anita Grogan, the parents of Holly Grogan, are blaming Facebook and other social networking sites for the death of their beautiful daughter, according to the Times Online. Because of their loss they are urging other parents to watch out for these online attacks.
“Holly struggled to cope with the huge pressures placed upon her by the modern complexities of ‘friendship groups’ and social networking,” the Grogans said in a statement. “Every responsible parent will empathize with our constant battle to instill self-belief and confidence in our children.” (The New York Daily News)
