Betty on the News: West Texas Polygamist Sect Member Guilty of Sexual Assault
The arrest marks the first criminal case against Texan polygamists since 2008.
On Thursday 38-year-old Raymond Jessop was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor with whom he had a supposed “spiritual marriage.” He is the first polygamist sect affiliate to face criminal charges following last year’s raid at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in West Texas.
Jessop, who supposedly has a total of nine wives, impregnated a 16-year-old girl (now 21) after she was “reassigned” to him. He is currently in jail and faces up to 20 years in prison. Jurors are expected to head back to court Monday to decide what his punishment should be.
“There is a sound foundation based not just in documents – based in DNA evidence for which the documents serve as corroboration … that Raymond Merril Jessop behind those gates, behind that guard house, behind those walls, sexually assaulted” the then-teen, Assistant Attorney General Eric Nichols said Thursday.
