Daily Dish: Tyler Perry Reveals He was Abused as a Child
The funnyman gets candid in a startling message to fans
In a shocking new revelation that is enough to make anyone squirm, comedian Tyler Perry admits that he was severely abused as an adolescent.
The 40-year-old Madea Goes to Jail star recently wrote a letter to fans on his Web site which states that he believed he would die before reaching adulthood.
Tyler’s declaration came just after he sat through a screening of Precious, a film about a 16-year-old girl who is physically and emotionally mistreated, which the actor executive produced with friend Oprah Winfrey.
“My father came home, mad at the world,” Perry said of his horrific upbringing. “He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back.”
Perry also opened up about being molested by a friend’s father, and about discovering that his own father was doing the exact same thing to a close pal.
After watching Precious, Terry says he completely broke down.
“It hit me so hard, I sat there in tears realizing that somehow, by the grace of God, I made it through,” he wrote. “My tears were tears of joy, being thankful that I made it.”
While we are heartbroken that Tyler had such an unbelievable childhood, we are so thankful that he managed to pull through.(People)
