Using Obagi While Pregnant

A pregnant woman seeks advice about whether or not her fetus was affected by Obagi.

Am I Safe?

Dear Beauty Queen: Hi I am 23-years-old and have been using Obagi since the age of 19. (Obagi contains hydroquinone, a skin lightener, not recommended while pregnant). I just discovered I was six weeks pregnant about 5 days ago and have ceased using the product, except for its smoothing lotion that exfoliates and the Retin-A. I’m just wondering if my fetus has been affected and if my new regimen that includes using ‘Caudalie’ is safe? I won’t be able to see a doctor until next week and was looking for some peace of mind until then. Thank you for your time!

Beauty Queen: Don’t worry, you should be fine. And to help you rest even easier, I consulted West Palm Beach, Florida dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. According to Dr. Beer, “The risk is minimal and although I prefer that people use nothing during pregnancy, the likelihood that anything will happen is slim. Millions of women have safely used these types of products during pregnancy with no adverse events.”

Obagi is great stuff, but just to be on the safe side, you should put it away until after you’ve given birth, and after you’ve finished breastfeeding (if you choose to do so). I’m a huge fan of Caudalie, and since the line derives its active ingredients from grapes, you and your fetus are in the clear.

Good luck, and don’t forget the SPF 30 (with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) to help prevent pregnancy-related discoloration!
