Getting Ready for The Ball: Part 3
Chicago is abuzz with Inaugural anticipation and “what will Michelle Obama wear?”
-Jayne Chase and Jennifer Goodkind, A Fashionable Life
We are so excited that Jayne and Jennifer have agreed to give us the inside scoop as they prepare to cover the Inauguration on Tuesday! They’ll be blogging about all the events and balls they cover next week. For now … take a peek at what goes on as they get ready for the balls. Read about their search for the perfect gowns here and their hair and makeup planning here.
I have just returned from Chicago, where I use to live, to host a dear friend’s birthday celebration. Despite the excitement in town for her event, (she is a bigwig), the fever pitch for the Inauguration is over the top! From the Obama paraphernalia being sold on every street corner to the covers of magazines and newspapers, Chicago is abuzz with excitement!
Obama items for sale everywhere!
Many of the Obama “insiders” were at this birthday celebration, chatting about their gowns for the Illinois and other Inaugural Balls, Desiree Rogers, the new White House Secretary’s move to DC, who from town was invited to attend all of Oprah’s Inaugural Events, and of course what the new first lady will be wearing to the Inauguration.
I asked Maria Pinto, Michelle Obama’s local designer, who attended the evening portion of the birthday celebration (yeah you guessed it, this was a BIG birthday), when she was heading down to Washington. She only smiled and talked about being a guest on our weekly radio show, A Fashionable Life. However local “insiders” think Michelle will be wearing one of her creations especially since the President-elect has chosen to wear a local Chicago designer for his tuxedo, Schaffner Hart and Marx. Maria is a friendly midwestern women who is approachable despite her new national fame. Jen and I think Michelle WILL choose to wear a Pinto design. She feels comfortable with Maria who has been providing her with fabulous clothes for years. Let’s see if our fashionable intuition is right! (Pictured above – Michelle Obama with Maria Pinto.)
Oprah and the Obamas are Chicago buddies.
Our balls gowns arrive today! We also need to bring cocktail dresses since we will be reporting from the ABC NEWS BUREAU in DC from 8-10 p.m. on Tuesday evening and then, changing into our gowns and somehow getting across town to the Washington Hilton where we will be reporting on the Red Carpet from the MTV/Youth Ball. Our ABC producer, Jessica, informed us yesterday that we will also be reporting from the Monday night Neighborhood Inaugural Ball and Kid’s Inaugural Ball where Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers will all be performing. This event will air live on Monday night from 8-10 p.m. on ABC as well as the Disney Channel.
After exercising today, I will get my manicure and pedicure. Sunday will be packing, relaxing and taking with Jen to make sure our Inaugural “check list” is complete. We leave bright and early on Monday a.m. — stayed tuned for more fashion scoop from our nation’s capital!
