5 things to take on a weekend quickie getaway
-Lois Joy Johnson
It’s a scary year even when you’re in love. Fashion brands, magazines and stores are closing, some New York designers are canceling runway shows for Fashion Week, and more layoffs are in the air.
I can’t help thinking back to the days of 9/11 when I had a hefty emergency bag packed and parked on my closet floor for about a year. In it were not the usual survival-guide items but my own quirky basics, including an insanely heavy jar of Crème de la Mer, Manolo Blahnik suede stiletto boots, my favorite black cashmere sweater, a Barbour waxed jacket with zip-out faux-fur lining, and a dictionary. What was I thinking? Was I being practical? No, but just knowing it was there gave me confidence.
My emergency kit for a romantic weekend at a B & B is quite a different story. My bag is packed with goodies for a February 14 getaway. I’m traveling light, being pragmatic and trying to ignore the more commercial aspects of a day designated for romance. I’m taking:
A moisturizing mask and super rich body treatment to turn my wind-beaten face and sandpapery legs touchable again. Clarins HydraQuench Cream-Mask ($35) and Sephora Vanilla Cupcake Body Butter and Dry Oil( $16 each at sephora.com) provide an instant makeover.
A super-speedy whitening kit and toothpaste to counteract the dingy after-effects of all that mood-enhancing red wine (red wine is supposed be so good for your heart!). My Rembrandt 2 Hour Whitening Kit ($24.99) has peroxide and a customized mold-to-my-teeth tray. Followup brushings with Rembrandt Intense Stain Toothpaste ($7.99) will take care of Earl Grey tea stains (due to my ongoing caffeine habit).
A red camisole and boyshorts duo simply because it’s such a sweet surprise under jeans and a sweater. Jezebel‘s cami and boyshort ($26 and $16 respectively).
Broken-in boyfriend jeans and a sexy sweater make chilly nights in front of the fire cozy. J. Crew’s vintage slim jeans ($148) in an antique wash look great with a deep V sweater like Gap’s lantern sleeve black cotton/cashmere style ($49). Just add heels.
A contour kit for face and body Mally Beauty Shimmer Shape and Glow ($49.50, HSN.com) erases chin dribble and gives everyone cheekbones while Smokin Hot Legs from It Cosmetics ($69, HSN.com) can trim your thighs with water and sweat-resistant body makeup. Why? Has your diet and exercise regimen really kicked in yet? Mine hasn’t.
