Katherine CenterWith spot-on precision about what it’s like to parent young children, Katherine Center‘s Everyone Is Beautiful is a pure work of art and a charming love letter to all women and mothers. So often as I read, I felt I was being transported back in time to those crazy days of diapers, sippy cups, tantrums and “I don’t feel like putting on my clothes” moods little children have.

Very young children truly do suck the life out of their mothers, and Center’s main character Lanie – who finds herself in a new city with no friends – is no exception. You feel Lanie’s urgency to want to be something more than just a producer of children. Don’t get Lanie wrong – she knows motherhood is a blessing, but she also is thrown into the trenches with no one by her side to lift her out at a time when most mothers need an army of help just to make it to bedtime.

Everyone is BeautifulCenter portrays exactly what it’s like to be a mom who’s overwhelmed, exhausted and truly in love with her children.

When Lanie and her family move from Houston to Boston, she’s in the midst of the tornado of rearing her three young boys, but she drops everything she’s ever known to follow her husband, Peter, and his dreams of being a musician. What follows is every post-partum mom’s dread. An unintentional act of humiliation sends Lanie into a flurry to rediscover herself, to become the woman she once was, no matter what. Even if it involves losing the husband she created her family with.

With a cast of characters who are as real as your next-door neighbors, we travel with Lanie through her self-discovery. Everyone is Beautiful is genuine story that reminds us that we’re all beautiful, and we’re all different, and sometimes it takes getting further from yourself to really discover who you are.

I would love to win a copy of this book. I can relate to her story so much as I am sure most mothers can. When my children were small, I always felt like I was someone’s mother and someone’s wife, but not me — there was no Angela. I spent my days and nights doing everything for everybody else. I loved them dearly, but you lose yourself somewhere in all of that and the road back to self-discovery is sometimes a bumpy one.
