A Study States that Popcorn is Good for You!
Looks like popcorn is now the new ‘super food’ that packs a huge nutritional punch.
We’ve been told time and time again that to get all the nutrients you need, you need to eat a ton of blueberries, goji berries, noni juice, mangosteen and a few other fruits we’ve never heard of before. Happily, though, the newest super food is the treat we’ve been chomping on for years!
A study that was presented to the American Chemical Society last summer by Joe Vinson, PhD of the University of Scranton shows that popcorn has three times as much fiber by weight as sunflower seeds. It has a large amount of polyphenols- which are antioxidants that push back free radicals Free radicals can cause heart disease and cancer. Popcorn has also been shown to lower bad cholesterol, will balance your blood sugar and according to Vinson, popcorn nuggets are “nutritional gold nuggets,” because they are so rich in antioxidants.
“…Half a small box of popcorn in the cinema – is equivalent to one daily portion of brown rice or whole wheat pasta,” stated Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s hospital in London to the Daily Mail.
Microwaveable popcorn is higher in calories, though. Stick to air-popped popcorn for a healthy treat – and lay off the butter!
