Alas, David Beckham’s Olympic Dreams Have Been Crushed
Unfortunate news, David Beckham fans: Becks won’t be playing for Great Britain in the Olympics this summer. Boo!
Bad news, David Beckham fans: Our very favorite shirtless soccer/football player won’t be playing for Great Britain during this summer’s Olympic Games. Curses!
According to People, Becks feels a little let down, but he seems to be taking it gracefully. “Naturally, I am very disappointed,” he said, “but there will be no bigger supporter of the term than me. I would have been honored to have been a part of this unique Team GB squad. Like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.”
In some ways, maybe it’s not surprising; sports in general and the Olympics in particularly are well-known for the relative youth of their competitors, and at 37, David, as much as we love him, is on the older end of the spectrum. Indeed, only three of Team GB’s members are over the age of 23. It still kind of sucks, though, especially since he was part of the successful bid for London to host the 2012 Olympics.
At least he still got to take part in the Olympic flame handover ceremony in May!
