Christina Applegate takes on breast cancer with class and style
-Mary Beth Sammons
In a looks-conscious world where plastic surgeons’ numbers are on speed dial, I’d like to offer up a standing ovation to Christina Applegate. I’m applauding the 36-year-old Samantha Who? star who is staring breast cancer in the face and saying: “You picked the wrong person to mess with.”
In her first live TV interview Tuesday morning, this classy actress put a bright face on the fact that she had a double mastectomy three weeks ago, declaring that she’ll have the cutest (non-sagging) boobs in the nursing home. It took a lot of bravery and moxie to face off with breast cancer like that, especially since so far it only flared up in one of her breasts. She said she just removed both to ensure she would be cancer free. And, good news: she is.
I know in my house, I cringe when talk of the latest Britney svelte tummy topic surfaces on the Facebooks of my two teen daughters and when my 20-year-old manicurist announces to me that she has been saving money for a year for breast implants because her boyfriend thinks she would look so much better. Sometimes it takes a killer tornado like cancer to blast through our psyches to see what really is important. It is then when a true star emerges.
What impressed me most about Christina is when she said: “I love living, and I really love my life, and I knew that from this moment on it was only going to be good that was going to be coming. Yeah, I’ll face challenges, but you can’t get any darker than where I’ve been. So knowing that in my soul gave me the strength to just say, `I have to get out there and make this a positive.”‘
She’s the kind of Hollywood role model I want for my daughters.
So, with The Hills debut Monday and the fall reality TV season unfolding, I hope in my house I hear the teen crowd asking: Samantha When?
