Bethenny Frankel Wants You to Avoid Airline Food
The Real Housewife talks about healthy vacation eating.
Bethenny Frankel, the Skinny Girl of the Real Housewives of New York City, isn’t about to let you get away with eating fatty food—even on vacation.
Frankel, who recently gave birth to a daughter, Bryn, took to her blog to warn followers about the perils of airline food. (As a veteran of “snack boxes” that included high-fat cookies, chips, nuts and cheese, we understand.)
If you pick up your meal at the airport, Bethenny says, check out what the refrigerated section has to offer. At JFK airport in New York City, good choices include “boxed lunches (where the crunchy and fresh items are compartmentalized to prevent them from getting soggy) with grilled salmon salad, teriyaki chicken salad, and healthy sandwiches such as grilled vegetables and hummus on whole wheat bread.” (Side note: even if your local airport isn’t as well stocked as JFK, chances are good you’ll find turkey sandwiches, yogurt and water in the refrigerated section. So much better than the 2,500-calorie Mega Combo #3.)
Another good way to sidestep gross food, Bethenny says, is to bring your own snacks. You’d be surprised at how many supermarkets stock healthy stuff. Her suggestions include organic snack bars, “soy crunch” treats and low-fat and/or dairy-free cookies. Stash these in your carry-on for the flight.
As for her final piece of advice, well, no one ever accused Bethenny of being unrealistic. “Do the best you can with what’s available,” she says. Her last-ditch choice: nuts and chips instead of cookies.
