The Bettys are huge fans of Nancy G. Brinker and all she’s accomplished as the founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest organization for raising funds and awareness about breast cancer. So, we were thrilled to attend the swanky party celebrating the launch of her new book, Promise Me, on Monday night.

Susan G. Komen event

The very pink event was held at the modern IAC Building in New York City, where guests sipped on cocktails and nibbled on yummy hors d’œuvres like mini BLT bites and pint-sized cupcakes adorned with pink breast cancer ribbons. Nancy herself was there to sign copies of Promise Me, which is the inspiring story of how she founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure thirty years ago after making a promise to her sister, Suzy, who passed away from breast cancer.

Nancy wrote of the book on her blog, “Suzy was just 36 years old, with two small children, when she died of breast cancer. In that heartbreaking three years between her diagnosis and her death in 1980, we went through quite a bit together, as only close sisters can. One of our last – and most important – moments together was when Suzy made me promise I would do everything I could to fight the disease that took her life. My book is about what happened then – and since.”

All of the guests in attendance, including us, were filled with admiration for Nancy and how she’s devoted her life to such an important cause. Thanks to her efforts, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested approximately $1.5 billion to the fight against breast cancer, and has had a direct impact on helping women all over the world beat the disease. But, Nancy has made it clear that she won’t rest until a cure is found. She made a promise, and she’s going to fulfill it.

That’s the definition of a true Betty, if we’ve ever heard one before.
