This year’s big musical winner, Once, took the Tonys for Best Leading Actor, Best Direction, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. Interestingly, though, they didn’t perform “Falling Slowly” at the awards. “Falling Slowly,” you’ll recall, won the Oscar for Best Song the year the original film came out; and perhaps because it’s so well known, they chose to perform “Gold” instead. It’s always been one of my favorite songs from the soundtrack, so I’m certainly not complaining .
Newsies, Once, Ghost… Bizarrely, a lot of the new musicals on Brodaway this year were based on movies. Here, Cassie Levy takes on the role originally played by Demi Moore, while Richard Fleeshman slips into Patrick Swayze’s shoes.
6. Leap of Faith
I will love Raul Esparza until the day I die. ‘Nuff said.
7. Nice Work If You Can Get It
Man, the Gershwins were all over the place on Broadway this season! Nice Work If You Can Get It, a pastiche musical named for the song of the same title, features a score drawn from George and Ira Gershwin’s great songbook hits; and when you’ve got Matthew Broderick and Kelli O’Hara selling it? Magical things happen!
Up next, let’s take a look at this year’s musical revivals!
