11. Jesus Christ Superstar
Interestingly, Broadway chose this year to revive both Godspell and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Superstar, which more or less tell the same story, just in two entirely different ways. Which do you prefer, the chic slickness of Superstar or the homegrown energy of Godspell?
One of Stephen Sondheim’s odder musicals, Follies’ tale of once-great performers and broken loves has a non-linear story and a wacky second act. Would you want to be with the girl Buddy is singing about here? Us neither—but the tale is tragic from her end, too.
13. Neil Patrick Harris’ Closing Number
I’ll admit that this closing number isn’t quite as showy as last year’s was, but I’m willing to roll with it. Keep it classy, NPH!
