Although it’s tough, a vegan diet has a few fabulous advantages: You get to lose weight, be healthier and feel extremely virtuous. What more could you want? Glee’s Lea Michele and Natalie Portman (Black Swan) are two converts to the strict eating plan, which involves eating “plant-based” foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes (i.e. beans like pinto, red and black). And although there’s no word on how many pounds the women have dropped, weight loss is inevitable. In fact, nutritionist Cynthia Pasquella told US magazine that the foods are so low-calorie that there’s no need to keep track of how many calories you’re eating. But because nothing is perfect, here’s the downside: you have to give up dairy and animal-derived foods as well. That means no milk (even in your tea or coffee), fish, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, most chocolate bars or many, many desserts.
Some well-known vegans, like Hilary Swank and Julia Stiles, have had to backtrack, US reports. If you’re interested in taking the vegan challenge, consult your doctor and see if it’s right for you. (US)
