Celeb Health Alert! Mel Gibson and Male Menopause?
Gibson wonders if he’s just hormonal.
In a letter to Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his child, Mel Gibson wondered if he was behaving erratically because he might have male menopause, according to the website TMZ.
The “frantic, rambling” letter, TMZ said, was before Gibson’s blowups with Oksana went public earlier this year. “I’m so whacky and depressed, but I need to get well and re-enter life…I’m just not myself and feel bad when I am so f***ed up and sick around you…Maybe it’s some kind of male menopause.”
Male menopause, called late-onset hypogonadism, does exist, although it is much less common than menopause among women. Researchers at the University of Manchester in England found that about 2 percent of men over 40 may have it, according to the website WebMd. Since male menopause is indicated by a drop in testosterone levels, men who have the condition were found to suffer from “erectile dysfunction, decreased sex drive and decreased frequency of morning erection,” WebMd reported.
Oksana has a daughter, Lucia, by Gibson. Over the past several months the two have exchanged charges of domestic violence on his part and attempted extortion on hers. Now they’re battling over custody of Lucia, who was born in 2009.
But the letter, written in 2008, indicates that the couple had problems long before the differences became public. “I don’t want to inflict this unhealthy version of myself on you,” wrote Gibson. Whatever he meant by “unhealthy,” it doesn’t sound like male menopause. (TMZ, WebMd)
