I’d been seeing celebs like Jessie J, Ashley Tisdale, Alexa Chung, Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Bosworth, and of course, Nicki Minaj rock the dip dye trend since this summer. The two-tone look can go from colors not found in nature (purple, red, tangerine, and lavender or blue) to shades of blonde and brown.

Looking at photos is one thing, though, and looking at it when it’s worn by someone in real life is another. So, when I met British DJ Chelsea Leyland at an event and saw her lavender tipped locks, I was amazed at how beautiful it looked. I fell in love with the idea of getting it done.

Me being me, I debated it for awhile. Part of me was like, “Ooh, yes! Let’s do this thing.” The other half (the one that was brought up in topsiders, Shetland sweaters, etc.,) said, “Excuse me, are you a circus clown?” Shutting up the prepster inside of me is a daily exercise. Okay, I confess, I still own topsiders. Anyway…

After deciding yes, I would do this, the next question was where. I found out that Prive Salon, located next to the SoHo Grand, does the style, so off I went. Prive Salon is an airy, relaxed retreat decorated in the cool blues, greens and whites of the Mediterranean. When I walked in, I was told “we have a dressing room set up for you.” If you ever want to feel like a celeb, come here! They have pitchers of lemon water in the dressing room!

Once robed, I met celebrity stylist and colorist Jorge Luis and his charming assistant Russell. Russell has fantastic hands. Feeling stressed? You have to have him shampoo your tresses. He melts your tension away. And you can bask in his sunny smile as an added plus.

Jorge is tall, funny, sweet-natured, and patient with nervous clients like me. He truly loves what he does. I had no idea this movie buff also does Sofia Vergara’s hair, as well as a whole bunch of other celebrities. When I found out, I almost fainted out of my chair. If there’s a big award show in Hollywood, Jorge is there, tending to A-list tresses.

The process was pretty cool. First Jorge used Majirel color to touch up my roots and to banish any brassiness. Then he used Manic Panic in a deep lavender for the dip dye. For both processes he used balayage instead of traditional foils for the processes. “Balayage,” Jorge told me, ‘is a more precise method for creating highlights. It looks more natural than foil highlights. It’s less damaging to the hair, too. Instead of worrying if one side is processing while it is trapped in foils as you’re doing the other side, with bayalage, all of the hair is processing at the same time.” And it’s very artistic. Watching Jorge work, I was reminded of painters working on canvas. Each stroke adds subtle nuances to your hair.

After my blondeness was corrected, Jorge started the dip dye on the back of my head. He created a sort of pyramid of purple highlights. With the first part, the foundation was strong, but as he went up towards my crown, the highlights became fainter.

When I asked him what he thought of the dip dye trend, he said. “I think it’s fun. Hair should be fun. It should reflect your personality. If you can carry it, it will be amazing… hair is an accessory.”

That night, I met up with some girlfriends for drinks. They loved it, the guys at the next table thought it was cool. Walking down Broadway the next day with friends, I got “I love your hair!” yelled at me a few times.

I love it! It’s insane, it’s cool and pretty. I keep petting my ends. In fact, I feel a bit X-Men-ish. My secret power is giggling.
