Jane and Jim Carrey

Meet Jane Carrey. Jane is 24, a mother and an occasional waitress. She’s also a musician, and she recently auditioned for American Idol in San Diego.

She’s also Jim Carrey’s daughter.

Boy, this could get interesting!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: What? Jim Carrey has a daughter? Since when? Since 1987. Jane is Jim’s daughter from his first marriage to Melissa Womer. Jim and Melissa divorced in late 1995, but Jane clearly still has a great relationship with her father. In her pre-audition interview, remarks that is was fun growing up with Jim as a dad—he’s not, as she puts it, “the most extravagant celebrity,” and consequently her upbringing was “fairly normal.” Though she did repeat “fairly” a second time, and rather emphatically at that

So why is Jane auditioning for American Idol? Easy: She’s trying to make her place in the world. She notes in her interview that everyone struggles with identity issues growing up, and that it can be especially difficult growing up in the shadow of something as big as Jim Carrey. Her last name can both help and hurt; on the plus side, it can’t hurt to be related to Jim, but at the same time, if she does in fact “make it” in some way, she runs the risk of people chalking it up to her famous dad. She wants to make her way on her own steam. Good for her!

Do you think she’s got the chops? Check out her audition here—she sings “Something to Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt:

My own two cents: I’m not really sure if she’s totally got what it takes to become a major pop star, but her voice is nice, and I commend her for taking the risk. Also, I sort of love a) that Jennifer Lopez remembers little two-year-old Jane and b) how happy Jane’s dad was for her when she called to tell him the news. Looks like Jane’s going to Hollywood!
