Cynthia Rowley Has A Guerrilla Runway!
Her resort collection has an unusual debut.
Talk about taking it to the streets! Designer Cynthia Rowley and crew pulled up to the Conde Nast building in a black trailer and promptly at one o’clock took over their sidewalk with a fashion show.
First of all, the models are tall. Really tall. They towered over the bike messengers who stopped to take their photos. There wasn’t a runway per se; they came out of the trailer and walked to a spot and stood next to us. People stopped, gawked, took photos and tried to pick them up. Editors from Conde Nast publications stood with the rest of the press and watched nine models wearing 18 looks show off Cynthia Rowley’s Resort 2011 collection-what we’ll want to wear during our winter vacation.
The looks ranged from body conscious dresses to loose cardis paired with full length skirts. There was a modified sort of metallic fabric looking harem pants (please let this trend die) and loose, but short, black linen shorts. A model wore a polka dotted cardi over a pink retro two-piece swimsuit with a coral reef print. Speaking of colors, they ranged from deep navy to soft ivory.
And oh, the accessories! Say hallelujah to Cynthia for using über high platform shoes! While I loved the sequined anklets, I’m too klutzy to pair them with platforms – all I need is the sequins to catch and wham! I’m on my face. There were tiny heart-shaped bags and a huge tote with tassels. There was a long brass articulated fish necklace that has my number! The sequin bucket hat is a definite keeper. You could wear that baby all through the summer.
In keeping with the guerilla feel, I shot a video of the models standing in their looks. Watch closely; you’ll see where I careen into a cameraman.
The collection hits the stores at the end of November. Until then, we can dream about them.
