Designer Tadashi Shoji Loves Women: Mercedes Benz Fall 2012 Fashion Week
Shoji’s fall collection was a sumptuous collection of lace, silks and velvet.

Tadashi Shoji’s show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was, and we don’t use this word lightly, glorious. Walking into the tent, we were greeted by a huge square of lace projected against the back wall and romantic French songs. As the lights dimmed, the room hummed with excitement and anticipaition, the doorway to backstaged glowed bright.
Then the show!
Cocktail frocks in Venetian and Chantilly lace with Fortuny pleats floated down the runway, as did floral laser printed dresses and velvet gowns. It seemed to us that each dress that came down the runway was the most stunning. Then we saw the next one, then the next one. By the time the show ended we realized two things: we had entered a happier, prettier place and that when PJ finds her fictitious celebrity boyfriend, she’s wearing Tadashi on the red carpet.
April’s program, covered in swoony notes. “TADASHI SHOJI LOVES DOWNTON ABBEY TOO!”
As we breathlessly related the show to someone we ran into later in the evening, April summed it up by saying, “You can tell he loves women.”
And it’s true — think of Octavia Spencer rocking Tadashi Shoji at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards this year, and who could forget Kelly Osbourne on the red carpet in the lavendar gown we saw at his show back in 2010? Those two women, with two different body types, positively glowed in Tadashi Shoji’s gowns. This says so much about the designer: he wants women to look good and feel great.
We hope one day we have an ocassion to wear one of his gorgeous creations — for now, we will admire from afar.
