A new study suggests that women who post a lot of photos on Facebook are seeking attention, but from whom?

A new study released last week found that women post more photos to Facebook than men, and that women who post a lot of photos are using the site to compete for attention and measure their self-worth by their physical beauty and how good they look in photos.

We have a suspicion that women are simply more likely to take pictures than men (how many guys do you know bring their cameras with them when they go out?), but there’s something to be said about the second point of the study. Are we really that vain? And, who are we competing with: are we posting Facebook photos to get attention from men, our friends, or to just give ourselves a little ego boost?

To find out, we asked real women about their social networking habits and what motivates them to post photos of themselves for everyone to see. Here’s what they had to say:

“For me, Facebook is a way I share my life with my peers and is the way I essentially communicate. It always feels great to have someone say you looked great in a picture with a certain outfit on, and I do find myself untagging pictures I don’t find myself attractive in.” – Caroline R., 21, WI

“I only post pictures really to showcase my personality and the things that I do. But I never post the ‘bad’ ones. So, you’re not going to see me drunk and propped up against a wall with my legs open, EVEN if that was actually what happened… I want to look just as great in the eyes of females as males with no percentage greater for either gender. I’m an Aries so vanity is a staple of my personality — I love getting great compliments, and therefore, HATE it when people tag me in a photo where I don’t look ‘perfect.’ And perfect to me is looking the most like me.” – Crystal G., 32, FL

“I do love that my ex-boyfriend gets to see the just-taken-airbrushed-totally-flawless headshot of me. And, who doesn’t feel flattered when someone comments and tells them they look good?! Its not a vain thing, it just makes you feel good. Its like going out in public and having someone tell you they like your hair or your outfit. It just makes you smile.” – Jen, 30, UT

I opened a Facebook account because I had a baby ad thought it would be a more time efficient way to share pics of him as he grew up. I didn’t really care how I looked in the photos, let’s face it – it takes a little time to take off the baby fat. But then I found other people on Facebook using the service in an incredibly juvenile manner so I stopped using the service myself. I’m a grown adult and have no intention of spending my time regressing back to junior high.
