Dolly Parton’s Teenage Beauty Tips: Berries for Lipstick + More!
Dolly Parton’s new book, ‘Dream More: Celebrate the Dreamer In You,’ dishes out plenty of wit and wisdom—and beauty tips!
Dolly Parton is more than just a country superstar. She’s a singer, a songwriter, a mult-instrument musician, a Broadway lyricist, a theme park owner, a philanthropist—and an author!
In Dolly’s new book, Dream More: Celebrate the Dreamer In You, the singer dishes out loads of wit and wisdom about her life philosophy: Dream more, learn more, care more, and be more. She illustrates her points with stories from her life, ranging from her humble beginnings all the way through the megastardom she’s achieved today.
Dujour got their hands on a few excerpts, one of which reveals Dolly’s best beauty secrets from when she was a teenager. Growing up in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, things like makeup were hard to come by. So what did Dolly do? She got creative, of course! “Until I was a teenager,” she says in her book, “I used red pokeberries for lipstick and a burnt matchstick for eyeliner. I used honeysuckle for perfume.” Talk about all-natural beauty products!
But her creativity wasn’t just due to a lack of Target stores. Explains Dolly, “We were raised in the Pentecostal Church of God and they believed that wearing makeup was sinful. My Grandpa Jake, my Mama’s dad, was a preacher. So I had to sneak around and make myself look all pretty but then wash it off before they caught me.” Regardless as to whether you grew up in a religious family or not, we can probably all relate to sneaking beauty product on the sly!
