For wounded warrior Tracy Balan, transitioning into civilian life was made even more difficult because of a broken femur bone and outdated attitudes about women service members.
“My broken left femur has been hard for me, in the fact that I have to stretch a lot to stay limber and be able to stand on my leg for long periods of time,” she explained. “I had to get a trainer who taught me special stretches to deal with the rod and pin in my leg. I have visited the VA hospital and they asked me if I was the daughter or wife of a veteran. I am always so shocked that in this day and age, they wouldn’t think I was a veteran. F2F shines a major light on that.”
Balan is now gainfully employed as a stylist by Oasis Day Spa, which volunteered to make over the women in the F2F PSA. You can check out Barrios, Balan, Jessica Otten, Leslie Nichole Smith, and Lisa Dalhouse in the PSA. Outfitted in DKNY, these five veterans received a standing ovation last month during its JumboTron broadcast at Yankee Stadium. We’ll salute to that!
