BettyConfidential: How did you become a designer?
Miriam Ariano: After a long and successful banking career came to an end, I decided to reinvent myself by doing something I really loved: Jewelry design. I spent a couple of years traveling and visiting ancient jewelry exhibits, and my jewelry grew out of that.
BC: When you were traveling, where did you go? What kinds of jewelry exhibits did you see?
MA: I went all over the place! I visited the Gold Museum in Bogota, Colombia, which holds the largest collection of Pre-Columbian art in the world. It houses thousands of gold jewelry pieces as well as ceremonial offering pieces such as the famous golden raft used in the ceremony in the legend of El Dorado, “The Lost City of Gold.”
I also went to London to see the British Museum’s wonderful selection of Etruscan jewelry pieces consisting mainly of large disc earrings. Additionally, Rome and Florence both house innumerable museums with jewelry exhibits centered around Roman and Greek history. And right here in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there is a magnificent exhibit of Egyptian art and jewelry.
BC: What was it about design that drew you to it?
MA: The beauty of the gemstones.
BC: Can you tell us a little about your design process? How do you get from the initial idea to the finished piece?
MA: Most of the time it, begins with a particular gemstone and the rest comes naturally. I try to stay as simple as possible. I find beauty in simplicity.
