First Look: Is Daniel Day-Lewis the Hottest Abraham Lincoln Ever?
An image has surfaced of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s new biopic, ‘Lincoln.’ What do you think?
Were you aware that Steven Spielberg was making a movie about Abraham Lincoln? We weren’t, either, but we not only a) just found out about it, but moreover, b) have managed to catch a first glimpse of its star, method actor extraordinaire Daniel Day-Lewis. Take a peek here:
What do you think? Hottest Lincoln ever? Or will Benjamin Walker of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter give him a run for his money?
That aside, though, here are the deets on the movie: Apparently, Spielberg acquired the rights to Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, in 2001. The book focuses on Lincoln’s attempts to keep the nation together during the Civil War, a topic Spielberg deemed too big for one movie. The film, titled Lincoln, will narrow the story down to the last few months of Lincoln’s life, focusing on the end of slavery and the Union victory. Spielberg originally cast Liam Neeson as Abraham Lincoln way back in 2005, but he dropped out in 2010, saying that he was too old to play the part.
Enter Daniel Day-Lewis. Lincoln began filming this fall, and it’s planned for a late 2012 release. The photo came from Twitter user @UVAMichael, who spotted DDL-as-Lincoln at a restaurant. According to Variety’s Jeff Sneider, “Word around town is that DANIEL DAY-LEWIS hasn’t broken his Lincoln accent since March. His real name doesn’t even appear on the call sheet.” Ah, method acting at its finest!
The film’s screenplay was written by award-winning playwright Tony Kushner, and it also stars everyone from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tommy Lee Jones to James Spader and Sally Field. Look out for it next winter!
