Nicole Kidman Grace Kelly

Well, this is certainly turning out to be a good week for seeing how well today’s Hollywood actresses can transform themselves into iconic women of yesteryear! Yesterday, it was Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel as Janet Leigh and Vera Miles in Hitchcock; and today, it’s Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco. What do you think, Bettys?

Grace was as well-known for her style and glamor as she was for the many metaphorical hats she wore. From mere actress to Hollywood star to honest-to-goodness royalty, she always had that certain je ne sais quoi that set her apart from the crowd. And you know what? I can’t think of anyone better suited to play her than Nicole Kidman. For comparison purposes, here’s Grace in her prime:

It’s not an exact analogy, but in some ways, Grace Kelly can be seen as the Kate Middleton of her day: Born to a non-royal family (this time in the good ol’ US of A—Philadelphia, to be exact), she rose up from her relatively humble beginnings to become a bonafide princess. Ain’t that the dream?

Of course, unlike Kate, Grace was also the daughter of a three-time Olympic gold medal winner—her father, John Brendan “Jack” Kelly, took two golds in the 1920 Olympics and his third in the 1924 Games—and she herself was a movie star to boot. Still, much like Kate would do after her, as the Princess of Monaco, she captured the hearts of the people with her grace, elegance, and (of course) style. Talk about living up to her name!

Interestingly, Grace of Monaco is reportedly not designed as a biopic. According to Ace Showbiz, it follows her life during a very specific period: 1962, when her husband, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, and French president Charles de Gaulle were battling over Monaco’s status as a tax-haven.

Grace of Monaco also stars Tim Roth as Prince Rainier, Paz Vega, Parker Posey, and Frank Langella. It’s due to hit cinemas in 2014.

Tell us: What do you think? Will Nicole make for a convincing Princess Grace?
