Gratuitous David Beckham Shot: Elle UK’s History-Making July 2012 Cover
Why, hello there, David Beckham. You’re looking marvelous on the cover of Elle UK’s July 2012 issue!
Why, hello there, David Beckham! May we say that you are looking marvelous today?
Yes, and there, too. You are, without a doubt, a fine specimen of a human being.
Which, perhaps, is why you are being featured on the cover of the July 2012 issue of Elle UK. You see, this isn’t just any Elle UK cover—it’s a very special one indeed. One which has, in fact, made publishing history!
It’s true: David Beckham is the first male to appear solo on the magazine’s cover in its illustrious, 26-year history. Since its creation, Elle has been famous for its roster of fabulous female celebrities and models, as well as for the occasional male/female pairing (like this one, for instance); but never once has it had a man—and ONLY a man—grace its cover.
Until now. To celebrate the arrival of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Elle UK decided to break with tradition. “David Beckham is a national hero,” the magazine’s Editor in Chief, Lorraine Candy, said. “He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike.” The saying really is true: Women want him, men want to be him.
“Anyway, who doesn’t want to see a picture of one of the world’s most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine?,” Lorraine continued. And she is absolutely right! This is why we’d like to help you get your Wednesday off to a terrific start by presenting you with these lovely images of this lovely man.
