During cold months, who cares if you shave your legs? Some of my friends swear that hairy legs are extra insulation against the bitter temps. If you’ve been wearing dark, opaque tights, no one’s going to see the sprouts anyway, right?

But it’s getting warmer. The seasons are changing and it’s time to take your legs out of hibernation. To get your legs into tip top shape, we checked in with the shaving experts over at Pure Silk Shave Cream. They’ve passed along tips, tricks and the best way to shave your legs. Now it’s easy to keep them soft, sexy and great looking.

1. First things first, preparation is key!

When the weather is cold, humidity levels are low, leaving skin dry and more easily irritated. In order to help prevent razor burn and shaving bumps, your best option is to prepare skin by moisturizing at least twelve hours in advance of your shave. Moisturizing right before you shave can dull your razor, leaving it full of lotion and therefore preventing you from getting a close shave. So, if you’re planning to shave in the morning, it’s best to apply a moisturizer the night before.

2. Make sure your skin is well hydrated in the shower before you begin to shave.

Never, ever, shave your legs or underarms when they’re dry.

3. Dropping your razor in the bathtub or wiping it dry with a towel may knock your razor blade out of alignment.

Using a dropped razor out of alignment can result in nicks and cuts. Make sure you replace your razor if this happens so you don’t have legs covered in band-aids.

4. Since repeat razor passes can result in irritation, pick a shave prep that will stay on your leg and give you a clean shave.

Unlike shave gels which often run off the body in a wet, steamy environment, try a shave cream that will cover the desired shave area and adhere longer. If you have dry skin or even want an extra kick of moisture, try using Pure Silk® Moisturizing Shave Cream for Dry Skin. This ultra-moisturizing formula contains aloe, chamomile, Irish moss and vitamin E to help restore skin and provide a comfortable close shave.

5. Do not stumble out of bed and head into the shower to shave.

Your skin will be puffy from sleep and you’ll have stubble the same day. Wait at least 20 minutes before shaving.

6. Shaving, which exfoliates the skin, should be continued year-round, especially during the winter, to avoid flakiness and to reveal smoother, softer skin.

When shaving in the winter it is best to use lukewarm water. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water. The body needs water to keep going and if it doesn’t have enough, it will take it from your skin’s water reservoir. Six to eight glasses of water a day is the recommended amount.

7. Shaving against the direction of hair growth usually produces the closest shave, but also a heightened opportunity for irritation.

If you have sensitive skin, shave in the direction of hair growth – that means from your knee or thigh to your ankle.

8. Don’t use a dull razor if you have sensitive skin.

Dull blades may drag over your skin, ultimately resulting in chafing, nicks and cuts…ouch!

Remember to use a cream instead of gel. Unlike shave gels which tend to slide off legs in the wet, steamy environment of a shower, cream covers the desired shave area and adheres longer, enabling you to keep your shave prep on your legs for the duration of the shave. Better coverage, fewer repeat passes of the razor…better shave, silkier skin.

Shaving is a great form of mechanical exfoliation. Use a luxurious shave cream such as Pure Silk® Moisturizing Shave Cream. It will help moisturize your sensitive skin while gently helping to remove flaky, dead skin cells. No need for pricey scrubs and loofah sponges.

Tell us: are you excited to show off your legs this spring?
