Moving onto exercise, what are some of the quickest exercises to help burn off the pumpkin pie after the holidays are through?

Cardio is very important. Jumping on a treadmill or going for a run is the best way to drop weight fast. Interval training, which is sprinting between jogging, is also very effective. Be sure to mix up your routine, too- sticking to the same routine never challenges your body.

What motivates both guys and girls to get exercising?

I think that seeing celebrities looking fit year-round can be a motivation for both men and women. We know they are watching what they eat during the holidays! We all secretly want to have perfect bodies (or close to it), and working out not only makes you feel better about your body and the way you physically look, but is mentally good for you too. Working out as a whole is an amazing endorphin, and a confidence booster, AND a stress reliever.

How about when working with seasonal depression disorder? How do you work around that to get into shape?

The BEST way to beat seasonal depression disorder is to start exercising. The trick is getting motivated enough to actually get out there and start working out; but if you can start with just a little bit of a push- doing 15-20 minutes on the treadmill, lifting some weights- you will notice a huge difference in your mood and hopefully become hooked on the feeling you get after you start working out. People who can tell they are down in the dumps and can get moving doing some kind of workout- anything from yoga to swimming- will feel much better. The better you get at the activity, the more accomplished you feel!

Starting a weight loss plan- better to start now or save it for a New Year’s Resolution?

Start now! Having a New Year’s Resolution is a program for disaster. It creates an excuse to overindulge for several months before January 1, and then come the New Year, you have to totally change all the eating habits you have held onto for 2-3 months. I t happens time and time again: You will do it for a week or two… and then you’ll fall by the wayside. Being on a diet and living healthily is a LIFESTYLE, not a transient phase. Resolve to read 10 books in the upcoming year instead and save your health to work on year-round.

Aside from just exercising, what other activities or mental wellness sessions would you recommend?

Get outside and breathe in the fresh air. Drinks lots of water- it really pays off to drink a minimum of 8 oz a day, and it cleanses your system! And never forgot to laugh a lot. It’s been proven to extend our lives!
