How to work outside correctly
One must make adjustments when working out in high temperatures to ensure one enjoys the most effective and enjoyable workout possible. Here are some tips to keep you cool as a cucumber while getting your sweat on:
1. Slow and steady
If you are not used to working out in the heat, start with a shorter workout and gradually increase the time and intensity of your fitness regime once your body has had the opportunity to adapt to exercising in high temperatures.
2. Dress for success
Wear light and loose clothing or clothing that wicks moisture away from the skin. Also, avoid dark colors, as they will attract the sun.
3. Drink up!
Be sure to drink enough fluids both before and during exercise. Water is key, but it is also important to replace electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium when working out at an intense level in the heat. Sports drinks (preferably the lower sugar varieties) and coconut water can provide these necessary nutrients.
4. Say no to stimulants
Avoid caffeinated beverages as they increase the rate of dehydration.
5. Time will tell
Choose the time of day for physical exertion wisely. Avoid training during the hottest hours. Closest to sunrise or sunset is best.
6. Lather it on
Wear sunscreen! Sunburns can limit the skins ability to cool itself, so stay protected.
