It Finally Happened: Demi Moore Is Divorcing Ashton Kutcher
Demi Moore announced yesterday that she’s divorcing Ashton Kutcher. Surprised? Or not at all?
Is it just me, or does it seem like celebrity couples are divorcing left and right these days? Perhaps unsurprisingly, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have joined the club: Demi announced yesterday that she’s filing for divorce from Ashton following his recent cheating scandal.
In a statement to the Associated Press, Demi explained her reasons behind the decision: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life.” She also asked the public for “the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.” In response, Ashton Chimed:
It’s unclear, by the by, whether that Chime actually came from Ashton or from his team, since he swore off of handling his own Twitter after his Joe Paterno fumble.
Demi and Ashton starting dating in 2003, three years after her divorce from Bruce Willis; they married two years later. The relationship raised eyebrows from the beginning, largely because she was 16 years his senior. Furthermore, he was only 25 when they met, while she was 41. He had never had a high-profile Hollywood relationship, whereas she not only had, but had three children resulting from it as well.
And yet after the initial shock wore off, everyone for the most part let them be. Both of them, by the way, seemed as surprised as anyone by their new relationship. According to AP, Demi told Vanity Fair in 2007, “If somebody would have said, ‘OK, here is the prediction: You’re going to meet a man 25 years old and he’s going to see being with you and having your three kids as a bonus,’ I would have said, ‘Keep dreaming.’ I think it caught us both by surprise, and particularly him.”
I don’t really know whether to be surprised by the fact that Ashton allegedly had unprotected sex with a 22-year-old named Sara Leal, or not surprised at all. On the “surprised” side of things, Demi and Ashton really did look happy together: They did a lot of humanitarian work together, Ashton became Demi’s daughters’ stepfather, and they were early members of the Twitterati, a forum they used to express their affection for each other regularly. But I also keep coming back to the age difference, which scores some major points for the “not surprised at all” team. This isn’t to say that age differences are complete deal breakers—Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas are still going strong, for example—but Ashton was very, very young when he and Demi met. At 25, most guys are playing the field and having a grand old time of things. Ashton gave that all up—and I can’t help but wonder if part of him sort of regrets that. If so, maybe that’s what lead to the cheating, especially since it was with a younger woman. This, by the way, is also the second rumor of infidelity committed by Ashton that has circulated, so do with that what you will.
And in the meantime, the big question most people are asking regards something that seems sort of trivial: Will Demi change her Twitter handle? I’m going to guess yes, as it’s difficult to imagine her wanting to keep the name @MrsKutcher after divorcing Mr. Kutcher. But ultimately, that’s her concern, not ours. So rather than analyzing this thing to death, I think we probably need to back off and let her be. She did ask for that, after all, and she did so gracefully and without malice.
Chin up, Demi.
