Jon Hamm on the Perils of Shooting ‘Mad Men’
Who knew a show about ad men could be so dangerous? Watch Mad Men star Jon Hamm share his war stories with David Letterman!
I know, I know: When you think Mad Men, you don’t exactly think “death-defying stunts.” Jon Hamm knows this, too. This is why he understands your disbelief at the stories he is about to tell.
What stories, you ask? Well, Jon stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman last Thursday to promote his new film, Friends with Kids, and found himself telling David all about the variety of rather serious injuries he racked up shooting the first season of the AMC show. According to Jon, at the end of the first season, he was filling out a form reporting the injuries he had sustained on set—only to have his insurance rep look down at the report and see, among the itemization, things like “broken hand,” “8 stitches in head,” and “separated shoulder.”
Wait, what? All this on a show that takes place in an OFFICE? Gee, I guess being an ad man in the ’60 was even more cutthroat than we thought!
Our dearest Jon then proceeded to tell his war stories from the front lines of Mad Men in an appropriately amusing and tongue-in-cheek fashion. One about the broken hand is truly spectacular, by the way; even after he broke it, he was still able to keep working on the show with the aid of a removable cast. Have you ever wondered why one of Don Draper’s hands looked so wacky towards the end of the first season? Now you know why.
Want to know how he ended up with 9 stitches in his head and why he’s absolutely terrified of Elizabeth Moss, who plays Peggy on the show? Catch the full interview here!
Jon Hamm? Let us know the next time you get injured. We’d be happy to nurse you back to health!
