Justin Timberlake Keeps His Promises: A Night at the Marine Corps Ball
Justin Timberlake made good on his promise to Kelsey De Santis to be her date to the Marine Corps Ball. And what a time he had!
Remember over the summer when Justin Timberlake accepted a serviceswoman’s invite to attend the Instructor Battalion Marine Corps Ball? Well, he kept his promise! On Saturday, the “Sexy Back” singer was combat instructor Kelsey De Santis’ date to the shindig—and according to People, he said it “turned out to be one of the most moving evenings I’ve ever had.” Awww!
Justin gave the event a pretty fabulous write-up on his website. He seemed to like Kelsey a lot—they had some time to chat and get to know one another before the ball really went into full swing, and he wrote, “She seemed to me to be so humble and honest… Very cool. She also simultaneously seemed like she was nervous about the whole evening and if I was going to enjoy myself.” He reported that she asked him whether he was okay a bunch of times and told him that she hoped he was having fun. “I have to tell you, it’s not every day that I meet a 23 year old girl and she’s more worried about if I’m having fun or if I’m comfortable!” Justin continued. “It hit me all of a sudden that these were the type of people that look after us and our freedom…. I was really blown away.”
He got along with her friends as well, calling them a “’kick-ass’ group of people”—but it was the tribute video about the World War II Pearl Harbor attack and the September 11 terrorist attacks that really got Justin. He wrote about the first-hand accounts from the Marines who were there during those attacks, “[They were] so vivid and real. So honest, but so filled with a sense of compassion and adoration for this wonderful country.” He continued: “I glanced around the room at young men and women, spouses and soldiers… At kids way beyond their years, really… All so deeply entwined. Not just by battle…. But, by having such life changing experiences through them and to not ever waver in their love and respect for our homeland. That’s what I saw. A faith in us that has been tested time and time again. And, through it all, NEVER a drop of doubt.”
“I was truly moved,” he finished simply.
Honestly, I had a little difficulty stoaching Justin earlier in his career (I think it had something to do with the whole boy band thing), but in recent years, I’ve developed a growing respect for him. There’s more going on in him than just the standard pop star racket. He’s able to make fun of himself (hello, “D*ck in a Box!”), and he doesn’t seem to consider himself “above” anything or anyone. What made him say yes to Kelsey in the first place? It wasn’t because she gave one of his songs a shout-out (though he loved that), and it wasn’t because of the muscle-bound military guys standing behind her in her invitation video. No; it was for a much simpler reason: “I don’t get asked out ever!” Justin said during a press conference this summer. That’s kind of endearing, amirite?
Justin closed out his blog entry with the following message:
“To people like me who get to benefit from this type of person… One with character and courage. With strength and bravery. With humility and honor… I say: Send your thanks. Do it however you can. Write a letter, type an email… Hell, buy ‘em a beer next time you run into someone from our Armed Forces in a bar. When they say thank you for that drink that cost you 3 bucks, they’ll mean it. They won’t take it for granted and, they won’t forget it.
“Thank you Corporal Kelsey DeSantis. Thank you for inviting me. And, thank you for being my hero.”
We’re with you, Justin!
