Katy Perry and Russell Brand + 9 Celeb Couples We’re Sad Broke Up in 2011
Are you sad about Katy Perry and Russell Brand breaking up? Because we are. We’re also sad about these other cases of 2011 celeb splitsville.
Man. 2011 really wasn’t a good year for a lot of celebrity couples. Sure, there were a lot of unwarranted splitsville rumors floating around, and sure, some of the breakups that happened we can’t exactly say we were surprised by; but you know what? Some of the celeb breakups that happened actually made us kind of sad.
Take Katy Perry and Russell Brand, for instance. We may have initially scoffed at their whirlwind relationship (getting married after only dating for four months seems a little fast to us), but as they settled into their marriage, we kind of started to dig this wacky, off-beat couple. Subsequently, now that Russell has officially filed for divorce, we can’t help but feel a little crestfallen about it. We really wanted those two crazy kids to make it.
And so here is a list of some of the more disappointing breakups of 2011. We realize that there may have been higher-profile couples that called it quits (Ashton and Demi, Arnold and Maria) than those on our list; but these are the ones that actually made us kind of sad. Awww.
1. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
This one is probably the highest profile split on our list. JLo and Marc dated in the ‘90s, before his first marriage and her second; they finally tied the knot in 2004. They were one of the great power couples of the entertainment industry, so it was a pretty big shock when they announced in July that they were separating. They seem to be on good terms, though, successfully co-parenting their three-year-old twins Max and Emme and reuniting for Marc’s birthday in September.
2. Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard
Not long after Kim Kardashian’s disastrous divorce announcement—something we all gagged at—came the news that New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard were ending their relationship after two years of marriage. But unlike Kim’s announcement, Zooey’s and Ben’s hit us pretty hard. It’s possible some are rejoicing about this, though, as it leaves Zooey free to hook up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, should they so desire. As far as we know, they’re just friends, but they are awfully cute together!
3. Leonardo DiCaprio and Bar Refaeli
What a good-lookin’ couple. Leo and Bar met in 2005 at a party in Las Vegas the members of U2 threw for her. They were a little on-again-off-again, but once all was said and done, they were together for roughly six years before calling it off for good in May. They were unusually discrete as a couple, never once appearing on the red carpet together, which is one of the reasons we dug them together. Leo rebounded pretty quickly afterwards with Blake Lively—though naturally, it didn’t last. Such is the nature of the rebound.
4. Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard
Okay, so strictly speaking, these two didn’t break up in 2011; we did, however, find out about it in 2011. The American Horror Story star and the actor/playwright split almost two years ago, but chose not to go public with it until this past December. Points for not making a big huge deal out of it, though. Discretion is, as they say, the better part of valor.
More depressing celebrity splits, including Fred Armisen’s and Abby Elliott’s, up next.
