Michelle Williams Speaks About Heath Ledger’s Passing
She opens up to Nightline about her former partner and his unexpected passing three years ago.
To promote her new film, Blue Valentine, Michelle Williams sat down for an interview with Nightline and, for the first time, addressed the passing of Heath Ledger, who tragically died in 2007 after an accidental overdose, leaving behind Michelle and their daughter, Matilda.
The 30-year-old actress gets teary-eyed when she explains how she still doesn’t quite understand why it happened. “I found meanings around the circumstances but the actual event itself… I can’t find a meaning for it,” she says. “I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I found a lot of meaning in that but not in ‘why.’”
She goes on to say that she was fascinated by the book The Year of Magical Thinking at the time, and found it related to her circumstances. “In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed then are gone. It didn’t seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door or could appear from behind a bush. It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I’m sad to be moving further and further away from it.“
Though it’s clear she’s still in the process of moving on, Michelle says her number one goal now is to give their daughter, Matilda, the most normal childhood possible, saying, “It is of more importance to me than anything in my life.”
