Behind the Story
My Life in Crime
True crime research bring author face-to-face with true evil
In researching my first true crime book, Evil Beside Her, I’d been interviewing James Bergstrom off and on for a couple of weeks, trips to the jail where the guard escorted me to a small room. Bergstrom was brought in, his handcuffs removed, then seated in a chair across from me. A psychopath and a serial rapist, Bergstrom admitted attacking 35 women and raping five in the Houston area over a two-year period. To get Bergstrom to talk, I kept my feelings reined in, never showing how much he disgusted me.
“She wanted me, I could tell,” he said about more than one of his victims.
