No Marriage Thank You, I Will Take A Civil Union
French are opting for civil unions over marriage.
The French have always been ones to do things their own way, and now, they are frequently opting for civil unions, or PACS, over marriages. Although they were created in 1999 with the gay community in mind, surprisingly a great number of heterosexual couples are opting for the choice, which provides much of marriage’s legal benefits.
In addition, a civil union is easy to dissolve if it doesn’t work out. Forget messy divorce proceedings, all couples need is a registered letter. “We’re the generation of divorced parents,” said one woman who chose a civil union over marriage. “The notion of eternal marriage has grown obsolete.” Will Americans soon be taking on another French custom?
