Peggie Arvidson: Your life purpose, career advice … all in the palm of your hand

-Julie Ryan Evans

Peggie Arvidson is a hand analyst and soul-centric life coach. She’s more than your average fortune teller; she’s the owner of Awaken your Soul in Arlington, Va., where she provides tips, inspiration and rules to women looking for guidance in their lives and careers. She does this by reading the lines on their hands and providing the tools and guidance people need to live a fulfilled life.

Betty recently caught up with Arvidson to discuss how she became interested in palm reading and what it’s like to make your living at it.

What’s it like to be a hand analyst?

It’s never boring! There are plenty of nuances involved. The key is to get the word out about what I do (read hands), why I do it (to get women to live their best life NOW and not “someday” so they can initiate positive change in the world) and how I do it (by creating life maps to achieve their purpose using their fingerprints and the other information in their hand).

On a daily basis I meditate, write about hands and spiritual development, contact interesting people, conduct private coaching sessions and conduct readings over the phone. I also teach hand analysis at the adult education school, First Class in D.C., and via teleseminar – so I spend time preparing for class and reviewing my students’ work. I work at home, and more than 90 percent of my readings are done over the phone to accommodate clients world-wide, so I try to ensure I get up and move – usually a long walk with my dogs in the middle of the day.

hand printHow did you come to be a hand analyst?

I owned a pet-care company and had hired a marketing coach – which was one of the best decisions I made early in that business! At some point during our coaching she recommended I have my hands read. I thought she was nuts and told her so. I had no idea what a palm reading would do for my business. But my coach was adamant that this wasn’t just some fortune-telling thing – it would help me get clear on my purpose. (Prior to this I think I’d been lamenting that there had to be more to life than just a really successful company). So, I called this woman, set an appointment and was blown away. I felt safe, heard and understood. I loved the way that this complete stranger really saw all of me and didn’t judge one iota. This was a profound moment in my life to say the least. To hear another person articulate my life purpose and so accurately describe the inner struggles I’d had throughout my life – amazing. I had no idea how she did it, and I was hooked. I continued to run my pet-care company but kept in touch with this hand-analyst.

About six months later she said she was going to do a launch of a certification program – teaching others to do what she did. By now I was also coaching people on starting pet-care companies, and I couldn’t figure out WHY I wanted to learn to read hands other than idle curiosity – but I did. So I paid my money and embarked on an amazing adventure of learning to read hands. Over the course of a year we met twice in person for about six days each for intensive learning. The rest of the time we participated with teleclasses, tutoring, peer readings and some written tests. We were required to read 100 pairs of hands in the course of the year and submit their signatures as well as pass an oral exam that was given in front of our peers. It was a life-altering experience and I really learned so much about myself, but also about how to be kinder to myself and to love even the parts that area painful.

How are you different from a traditional palm reader?

For one – the intensive study as described above. And most importantly, my role isn’t to predict the future for you. How sad is it that so many people are searching for someone else to “run their life”? Sure, having read a few thousand hands since 2005 I see patterns – but those are based on human nature. The saying is “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get the same results,” right? Well, it’s true.

If I see a person with particular set of finger prints and several gift markings, I’m going to share their story with them. I’ll let them know the ways their particular life lesson or challenge has likely played out in the past and the ways it will probably keep cropping up. I let them know it’s perfectly fine to be themselves and I present the challenge of making friends with their lessons and finding ways to really learn them – not because they HAVE to or they’ll have some tragic outcome if they don’t, but because they really are here to live a great life and make a difference. Yet the only way to doing that is through the challenges. The challenge shows up most sharply when we’re avoiding our purpose. So the discussion revolves around creating plans and objectives to find the way through to their best life. However, I make it clear that it’s perfectly acceptable for them to choose to stay where they are. I look at it as the opportunity to share with people their own power – they have the power to change lives – -including their own, but they must choose. That’s the power – choosing.

But by and large, people find me because they are ready to live bigger and they want to know how. That’s the fun and juicy part – after the reading when we start creating a workable plan to live that big, fun, fabulous life – based specifically on their hand prints.

What can you tell by looking at someone’s hand?

I can tell their life purpose. I can tell their life lesson. I can tell the filter that they run things through. I can pinpoint the inner fears and challenges that they let confine them. Looking at someone’s hand is an intimate moment, and I look at it as a sacred time between me and my client. They have allowed themselves to be completely vulnerable – even if they don’t know it at first, and my job is to tell them the story of their life in a neutral and compassionate way.

I use stories to demonstrate their best potential and how their challenges have stopped them in the past. I ask them to review what is possible and to make choices to commit to the divine contract that is revealed in their fingerprints. A person’s fingerprints are the only part of the hand that does not change. They are formed early in the womb and they stick with you. I think it’s your cosmic code, your divine contract with the Universe of what you want to accomplish here on earth. I’m honored to bring that back to the forefront of someone’s mind. Most of us are going, going, going so much we don’t know how to go back to stillness. Although I believe we are craving some stillness. Especially in this particular time in this particular country, the old institutions are crumbling, and all the beliefs about them are changing too. It’s a call to go back to ourselves. And I can see YOU in your hands. The real you, whether you’ve spent years repressing it or are living it full out. I love when people are willing to share that time and really hear their soul. All I do is translate what’s waiting to be heard.

What’s your greatest success story?

Each story is a success, but I do have a client who is really breaking down all her old beliefs about herself and is working to create a life around her purpose. She’s doing it like we all do, by facing our nagging fears and self-defeating beliefs in the face and reworking them. She’s beginning to choose to believe in her greatness and not in her weakness or fears and as she progresses she’s getting better and better at recognizing the early appearances of her life lesson. When that happens she knows to look back and see what part of her purpose she’s been avoiding. I love watching her growth and confidence and the way she is willing to dare to dream a bigger and more amazing life – I know she’s going to change the world for the better.

Another great story was a mother and a daughter who came for a reading together – and watching them see each other in a new way – and really understand that they truly are “wired” differently but both perfect in their own way, was awe-inspiring. They left happier than they were when they came in and I ran into them several months later and they told me again what a profound affect the reading had on them individually and on their relationship. That felt great.

Finally, I want to add that our life purpose isn’t a job title, it’s rather a way of being. So in the final analysis, you have many ways of manifesting your life purpose – it’s how you define the traits in your life. If your life purpose is “Success” – you get to define what success is and create ways to live your success – it’s likely it will be related to your life lesson. Your life lesson may be Trust and Intimacy Issues, so if your purpose is Success and your lesson is trust, perhaps a way to manifest success is in having successful, trusting relationships.
