Betty Confidential: You design gorgeous, monogram-inspired jewelry. What is the story behind those designs?

India Hicks: My designs are inspired by my life, both past and present. My grandmother built a really spectacular collection of jewels from her time spent as the last Vicereine of India and from her well-documented life as a flag bearer for the Jazz Age set in the 1920s and 30s.

As the great-grandson of Queen Victoria, my grandfather was able to add to his wife Edwina’s collection such extraordinary things as the Star Tiara of diamonds and pearls. He also designed a new piece of jewelry every year for 38 years as an anniversary present for her.

My mother was also a tremendous influence. As a young girl, I loved watching her dress for dinner. Seeing her take out some of these pieces and try them on fired the imagination as it would for any young girl. My father, David Hicks, also designed a collection for the famous French jewelry house of Chaumet.

Given all this, it is not surprising that that I would venture into jewelry design. For the Love Letters collection, my father’s icon geometrics and initials were very inspirational. To me, they feel as fresh and modern today as they were when he conceived them.

What inspired the name of the collection and more up next!
