Rachel Zoe’s Big Health Secret
Why you should sport sunglasses all year long.

Summer has come to a close, but don’t pack away your sunglasses just yet. We’ve all sported everything from Wayfarers to aviators all summer long, but we don’t always think of sunglasses as year-round accessories. If you’ve found yourself in that camp, think again, because sunglasses are way more than just accessories. We talked to Ruth D. Williams, MD, media spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a glaucoma specialist at the Wheaton Eye Clinic to find out more about those sexy shades.
When to Wear Sunglasses
Rachel Zoe has the right idea – sunglasses should be worn anytime you’re outside, no matter the season. “We still get a lot of UVA/UVB radiation in the winter and in fact sometimes it can be worse [then],” Williams says. “If you live in an area where there’s snow or ice, you can get radiation off the snow and ice as well.” Even if you don’t have to worry about snowy winters, it’s important to protect your eyes year-round. Williams tells us she won’t leave the house without a pair of sunglasses. “I carry a pair of sunglasses everywhere I go, so as soon as I walk outside I switch into them,” Williams says. “I make it such a habit that I don’t even have to think about it.”
