8. Matilda (1996): Matilda Wormwood Blows Up a Television…With MIND BULLETS
Matilda (Mara Wilson) has both brains and spunk. So, when her less-than-understanding father literally holds her head to the television, perhaps it’s only to be expected that she used all that brainpower to blow the hated box up. Never underestimate the power of pint-sized bookworms!
9. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): Sarah Connor Breaks Out of a Mental Hospital
Talk about a transformation! Despite being held up in a mental hospital, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) gets fit and fierce. Though she’s eventually saved by the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzeneger), Sarah is incredibly daring —and creative! —in her attempt to break free. A heroine who overpowers an entire hospital staff? Pretty impressive in our book.
10. Aliens (1986): Ellen Ripley vs. Alien Queen
Sigourney Weaver’s acting career would be admirable even without her role as Ellen Ripley in the sci-fi classic Aliens. But we’re sure glad she was up for the part —though the Alien Queen might feel otherwise. In fact, Ripley may have set the template for the kickass action heroine; such recent heroines as The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen have been compared to the fearless spacelady. Are you ready for an ‘80s style battle of epic proportions?
